It was no surprise the Harmony House Concerts kicked off its 2014 music series with Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines; after all, this is the fourth consecutive January that music fans in North Texas have packed Harmony House to enjoy this unique duo.
The only surprise was that, somehow, Hendrix and Maines managed to sound even better than ever.
Hendrix is an enchanting songstress with 15 albums under her belt and a following all across Texas, but maybe the biggest compliment you could ever pay her is to say she can hold her own with Maines. And Sunday, this combination of a beautiful poet accompanied by a Texas music legend was backed by the Harmony House Choir.
Part of the charm of any Harmony House Concert is just getting there. If your ideas of going to see top-level regional talent involves a long drive, noisy traffic and limited parkking, Faye Wedell and Scott Lipsett have a pleasant surprise waiting for you. For more than 12 years, discerning music lovers have taken the path less traveled and ended up in a cozy living room with the likes of Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines, or Sara Hickman, or Pierce Pettis, or even Jimmy Lafave's entire band. It may look quite ordinary, but his isn't just any gravel road.
And musicians fresh from the rush of city traffic and hurried pace breathe easy when Wedell and Lipsett's little house on the prairie comes into view.
"When you turn the corner and see the pond with Harmony House in the distance, you think, 'I wanna live here,'" remarked Maines. "It makes you feel creative."

Hendrix is a multi-instrumentalist who defies definition by being equally adept at jazz, pop, blues and country, all the while a mischievous grin plays across her face. Maines, also a gifted multi-instrumentalist, is a Grammy Award-winning producer who has wowrked with everyone from Joe Ely to Jerry Jeff Walker to Robert Earl Keen.
"in our state," remarks Hendrix, "if you want it done right, you do it with Lloyd."
If you missed this memorable show, as they say in Fannin County, don't fret about it; another talented musician will soo leave the pavement behind and travel down a gravel road to one of the best-kept secrets in North Texas.

My friend and long-time
Musical icon who was
Birthed in the red dirt
Of Oklahoma and whose
Songs gave birth to the
Red Dirt Music of OK,
Which came from having Woody
Running through his veins and
Bubbling up like well springs
When Jimmy composed, played
His guitar, or added his unique voice
To his melodies — flowing out and upward!
His lyrics filled many tributaries, leading to
Rivers of venues and filling them with his soulful sounds —
Even into the ears and walls of Harmony House Concerts.
Departed now on yet another voyage
On May 21, 2017 to unknown lands!
As he prepared for this farewell,
He made certain that he
Expressed his love to son, friends, and fans.
In gratitude, they gathered together
In tribute to sing and say their farewells
To this generous, ‘gentle’ man,
Who gave his ALL to song
And gifted this world with
Music that will span the seas
Of time and remain with
Those of us left behind on vanishing shores.
Jimmy LaFave, born in 1955 in Stillwater, Oklahoma,
now walks ‘Woody's Road’
with Woody, Dave Carter, and other comrades
Beside the ‘still water’— guitar in hand singing his song
Close Your Eyes as the moon glimmers on the ocean
And the tide goes out just before sunrise.
